The twin-engine Douglas A-20 was designed by the American aircraft manufacturer to perform two main operational tasks. Its airframe, with its characteristic cantilever wing in a medium/high position, could be configured as a night fighter and attack aircraft, adopting a powerful weapon system in the front nose, or configured as a light bomber. The light bomber version achieved significant success not only with the USAF but also with the British RAF, which renamed the Douglas aircraft “Boston”. The nose of the Boston was glazed to accommodate the gunsight but maintained the front tricycle landing gear solution, innovative for the time. It could carry up to 1,800 kg of offensive load and was produced in a large number of units and used by the RAF, numerous Commonwealth air forces and some units of the Soviet Union air forces.
